Applications for this 2017-2018 Model United Nations Team are now closed.
Applicants who have been cleared to the interview stage should sign up for a time slot for their interview using the link given to them in an email from the team’s President. Interviews are scheduled for Friday, September 8th. Applicants should wear western business attire and prepare for the following scenario, which will be the majority of the interview.
September 2016 marked the beginning of a military confrontation between India and Pakistan in the divided Kashmir region. Conflicting accounts from both governments describe the fighting that originated the standoff along the Line of Control, one of the most militarized borders in the world. Since the initial strike, both armies have exchanged fire in subsequent skirmishes. Though both sides disagree on exact numbers, hundreds have been injured and dozens killed in the past year, with the most recent significant exchange taking place August 30th, 2017.
The fighting on the Line of Control is symptomatic of an unstable and hostile relationship between the two rival nations. Since their founding, India and Pakistan have been involved in direct and indirect conflicts stemming from disputes over resources, terrorism, neighboring territories and religious migration. This has been further complicated by opposing relations with allies such as China and the United States. Most recently, tensions have been renewed by comments from the US President regarding the two nations efforts in Afghanistan.
At the interview, you will be assigned as one of two roles:
-Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
-Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Abbasi
As one of these two Prime Ministers, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your country’s relationship with its rival, your objectives in the Kashmir region and your approach to resolving future military conflicts. Keep in mind that you are taking on the role of that specific leader, so you should speak in first person. You should not use an accent or wear a costume. Prepare for both roles, as you will be assigned at random during your interview.
